Villa Medici is participating in the 14th edition of the European Night of Museums on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM. During this event, visitors can explore the exhibition titled ‘Celestial Epics,’ which showcases 180 works from the prestigious collection of Bruno Decharme. These works fall under the category of art brut (also known as outsider art), challenging traditional notions of art and creation. The artists in this genre exist outside the world of fine arts, codes, and established places such as schools, academies, museums, and fairs.
The art brut pieces engage directly with anomalies of the contemporary world, addressing themes like wars, destruction, social injustices, and violence against children. Some notable artists featured include Henry Darger, Ramon Losa, Lázaro Antonio Martínez Durán, and Alexander Lobanov. The exhibition also explores fantastical universes, parallel worlds, and spiritual themes through anthropomorphic figures, talismanic drawings, and baroque architectures.
Collector Bruno Decharme’s dedication to building this significant art brut collection invites us to consider that creating a world is akin to creating a work of art. The exhibition will be accessible for a symbolic price of €1, with entry every 15 minutes from 8:00 PM to 1:30 AM, subject to reservation of a time slot
